1st Hour: Functional Skills
The focus of this course is to work on life skills, academic functional skills, community-based learning and social skills to meet the needs of individual students. Students in this course will participate in a large group morning meeting, have individual work time to practice functional skills and complete weekly functional skills activities modified to their needs.
2nd Hour: Transition Skills
This course is designed to meet individual needs of students in the areas of home living and community participation to increase independence and prepare students for life after graduation. Students will plan and complete a weekly shopping list. The class will follow a recipe to cook food for the class. Once a week, students will access the Pine City Library and participate in volunteer work or reading skills. Other topics will include: Safety Signs, Places in the community, Identifying safe people.
3rd Hour: Daily Math 6th Hour: Functional Math
The purpose of Daily Math and Functional Math is to teach real world mathematics through the presentation of real life experiences. Students learn how to incorporate new ideas, techniques, and mathematical relationships to solve problems. The EQUALS curriculum is used for this course and differentiates each lesson to meet the needs of individual students. Topics include, but are not limited to: pre-readiness math skills (cause and effect, everyday patterns), foundational math skills (numbers and operations, measurement, data analysis, algebra and geometry) and problem solving.
Home Living
THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO MEET INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS IN THE AREA OF HOME LIVING. IT IS DESIGNED TO BUILD INDEPENDENCE IN THE HOME ENVIRONMENT. TOPICS WILL INCLUDE; MEAL PLANNING AND PREPARATION, WORKING TOGETHER, READING AND USING RECIPES, HOME CLEANING PROCEDURES, USE OF APPLIANCES, FIRST AID AND BASIC HOME SAFETY ISSUES.
